Testing Information

Overview

United States Figure Skating (USFS) has a series of test levels with specific elements that skaters seek to attain.  For each test the skater must skate in front of one or three judges at a test session.  The judges each critique the skater and award points.  For the first level, pre-preliminary, the judges award either a pass or retry.  For the next level, preliminary and up, the judges assign points to various elements and the skater needs to compile a passing score by at least two out of the three judges.  The test levels, in order of difficulty are:

pre-preliminary
preliminary
pre-juvenile
juvenile
intermediate
novice
junior
senior

For each level there are two seperate tests, Moves in the Field and the Freeskate.  The skater must pass the Moves test prior to the Freeskate test in that level.  The skater may advance in Moves testing without passing the Freeskate test however.

Testing is a serious affair, unlike competitions.  The rink is quiet so the judges can hear the blades on the ice and sometimes talk with the skater.  If only one element is not skated properly the judges will request a "re-skate" on that particular thing.  If it is not correct on the second try the skater will receive a retry.

Your coach will tell you when it is time to test.  The test level is important for entering competitions and show placement.  Passing a test is a huge accomplishment for the skater!

Just like competitions there are test sessions throughout the state.  If you are willing to drive to the cities, there is a test session available almost weekly.  Occasionaly there are some in northern Minnesota too.  A registration form and fee are required.  For a lower test they start at around $35 and increase with the test level.  All test applications must be signed by the home club test chair.

There are also tests available for ice dance.  They have their own set of levels and seperate test sessions.  Ice Dance is very complimentary to any skater as it increases overall posture, beauty, power and elegance on the ice.  There are three dances per test level and each one must be passed to complete that level.  Not all coaches teach dance but most dance coaches teach freestyle.
